Abrasive Wheels & Irish Law

This course is built around the legislation that governs the safe use of abrasive wheels in Irish workplaces.

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005

Places a general duty on employers to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare of employees — including risks from work equipment such as abrasive wheels.

General Application Regulations 2007 — Work Equipment

Require that work equipment is suitable, properly maintained and used only by trained, competent people, with appropriate guarding and controls.

The 5-Step Risk Assessment

Irish guidance requires a structured risk assessment for abrasive-wheel tasks, covering hazards, who may be harmed, controls, recording and review — taught in this course.

HSA Guidance

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) publishes guidance on abrasive wheels and recommends training for everyone who mounts, dresses or uses them.

Abrasive Wheels
Introduction to Abrasive Wheels
Abrasive Wheels Training
Types of abrasive wheels
Types of Abrasive Wheels
Abrasive wheels are commonly used in many industries and workplaces. They come in many sizes and shapes and have a wide variety of uses, fitting machines from hand-held tools to very large industrial grinding and cutting machines.

The majority of accidents with abrasive wheels happen due to poor planning, incorrect selection and unsafe use.

The main safety risk is a wheel breaking or bursting at high speed due to being incorrectly or poorly mounted, which can cause serious injury or fatality. Other risks include eye injuries, harmful dust, vibration, noise and fire.

This course explains why everyone who works with abrasive wheels must understand these risks and the controls needed for safe use.

Your Full Certificate Includes a Practical Assessment

To receive your full Abrasive Wheels certificate, you must complete and pass a short practical assessment in addition to the theory section, confirming you can apply safe practice on the job.

After completing the theory modules and passing the theory test, you'll be asked to upload a short video (no longer than 1 minute, under 100MB) demonstrating safe practice — for example a pre-use inspection of an abrasive wheel and correct PPE.
