The legal position

What Irish Law Actually Requires

Written plainly, with the source named so you can check it yourself.

The law

Welding safety is covered by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, the General Application Regulations 2007 (work equipment, PPE, electricity) and the Chemical Agents Regulations 2001 for fume and gases.

What the employer must do

  • Assess the risks of welding fume and control exposure, usually with local exhaust ventilation
  • Control fire risk from hot work, often with a permit system
  • Provide suitable PPE and RPE
  • Maintain equipment and train welders

Welding fume

Welding fume is classed as a carcinogen, so exposure should be controlled as far as reasonably practicable — general ventilation alone is not usually enough.

Theory and practical skills

This course covers welding safety knowledge. It does not teach welding technique or certify welders.

Be clear about what this course is. It is online welding safety awareness training. It does not teach welding or certify welding competence.
