The regulation

Lifting equipment and lifting operations in Ireland are covered by Part 2, Chapter 2 (Use of Work Equipment) of the General Application Regulations 2007, under the 2005 Act. It sets out duties on selection, examination, marking and the planning of lifts.

What the employer must do

  • Provide lifting equipment suitable and strong enough for the load
  • Make sure lifts are properly planned, supervised and carried out safely
  • Have equipment thoroughly examined by a competent person at the required intervals
  • Keep records and train the people who use it

Before every lift

  • Know the weight and centre of gravity of the load
  • Check the equipment is marked and in date
  • Keep people clear of the load and the danger zone
  • Agree signals and who is in charge

Theory and practical competence

This course covers the knowledge element. Operating cranes, forklifts or other lifting machines needs separate practical training and authorisation.
