Choosing the Right PPE: A Head-to-Toe Guide

The wrong PPE is sometimes more dangerous than none at all, because it creates a false sense of safety. Selecting the right equipment means matching protection to the real hazard, the individual wearer and everything else worn at the same time. This head-to-toe guide walks through the main categories and the fit and compatibility checks that tie them together.

Start with the hazard, not the catalogue

Before choosing any equipment, identify what you are protecting against. A risk assessment carried out under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Part 2, Chapter 3 should tell you the nature of the hazard, who is exposed and how. Only then can you select PPE that is genuinely suitable. Remember that under Irish law PPE is the last line of defence — used after elimination, substitution and engineering controls. Head protection

Safety helmets protect against falling objects, impact and contact with fixed hazards. Choose head protection rated for the work — a bump cap for low-clearance areas is not the same as an industrial helmet for a construction site. Helmets have a service life and a maximum age; check the manufacturer's date and replace after any significant impact, even if no damage is visible.

Eye and face protection

Eyes are vulnerable to flying particles, chemical splashes, dust, molten metal and harmful light. The choice depends on the hazard:

Make sure the lens is rated for the specific risk and that the eyewear seals correctly against the face.

Hearing protection

Where noise cannot be reduced at source, hearing protection becomes essential. Earplugs are compact and comfortable for long wear; earmuffs are easier to fit correctly and to monitor. The key is the level of attenuation: too little leaves the wearer exposed, while too much can isolate them from warning signals and speech. Match the protector to the measured noise level rather than over-specifying.

Respiratory protection

Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) guards against dust, fumes, vapours and oxygen-deficient atmospheres. It splits broadly into two families:

Tight-fitting RPE only works if it seals to the face, which is why face-fit testing and a clean-shaven seal area matter so much.

A respirator that does not seal is not protection — it is a placebo. Fit is not a detail; it is the difference between safe and exposed.

Hand protection

Gloves are the most commonly issued PPE and the most commonly mismatched. There is no universal glove. Cut-resistant gloves do little against chemicals; chemical gloves may offer no grip on oily components; heat-resistant gauntlets are useless for fine assembly work. Select gloves by the dominant hazard, and confirm they allow enough dexterity and grip for the task — otherwise people simply take them off.

Foot protection

Safety footwear protects against crushing, penetration, slips, chemicals and, in some settings, static or electrical hazards. Consider toe protection, midsole protection against nails and sharp objects, sole grip for the surfaces underfoot, and any need for chemical or heat resistance. Comfort and correct sizing are not luxuries — boots that hurt get worn loosely or not at all.

High-visibility clothing

Hi-vis clothing makes workers conspicuous near traffic, moving plant and vehicles. The level of visibility required rises with the speed and volume of nearby vehicles and with poor light or weather. Keep hi-vis clean and replace it when the fluorescent fabric fades or the reflective strips crack, as both reduce its effectiveness.

Fit and compatibility: the step people skip

Choosing the right type of PPE is only half the job. Two further checks decide whether it actually protects.

Fit

PPE is personal. Equipment that is too large, too small or poorly adjusted will not perform as designed. Tight-fitting respirators need face-fit testing; helmets need correct sizing and adjustment; gloves and footwear need the right size for the individual. Where possible, offer a range of sizes and styles so every worker can be properly fitted.

Compatibility

When several items are worn together, they must not interfere with one another. Common conflicts include safety glasses breaking the seal of a respirator, earmuffs clashing with a helmet, or a face shield that will not sit over goggles. Always assess the full combination a worker will wear, not each item in isolation.
